The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is an advisory body in the EU institutional set-up representing European civil society. We act as a vibrant forum for European civil society dialogue – hence, ensuring a broader democratic legitimacy and effectiveness of the European Union.
The Sustainable Development Observatory, as a body within the EESC comprising 24 members from a wide range of civil society organisations, is dedicated to engage people in Europe and globally for a sustainable world. The SDO has made it its priority for the coming years to help ensure that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is implemented in Europe to its full potential.
“We face two major challenges with regard to sustainable development: as well as the environmental aspect, the associated social issues also need to be more carefully considered. It goes without saying that this must be based on the fact that both the environmental and the social aspects must also be linked to the economy, but an economy which is not destroying our children’s future. The EESC has always said that we don’t just need a green deal, we need a green and social deal, worldwide.” Lutz Ribbe, President of the EESC Sustainable Development Observatory
“Sustainable Development is about the future of people; the economy should, within the planetary boundaries, work for society to deliver prosperity and equity, now and for future generations. We expect the EU to be the world leader on Sustainable Development. The time for reflection is over, we need to act now. We fully endorse the European Sustainable Development Week as a wide-ranging initiative that helps to support and give greater visibility to all the bottom-up activities that aim to reboot the economic system with a new software, not just an update!” Peter Schmidt, President of the EESC Section for Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment
