Workshop on Waste Management for Greek Cities

The workshop’s objective is to help Greek cities, municipalities and regions to modernise their municipal waste management and adapt it to EU standards.

Municipal waste experts from similar cities from other EU Member States will share their experiences advanced municipal waste management, reducing adverse environmental impacts and waste disposal, increasing waste recycling and promoting waste prevention, improving services for citizens and developing circular economy opportunities for local businesses. These experts will preferably come from Eastern, Central or Southern European cities with a similar background as the target group of Greek cities, but with more advanced practice and experience in the waste municipal management. Based on the presentations, participants will explore how good practices from these similar cities can be transferred to Greek cities. The workshop will provide an opportunity for the participants to discuss and work on the practical challenges of modernising municipal waste management with their peers from cities from other EU Member States.

The workshop will also feed into the EU funded TAIEX project on Technical support for the implementation of the National Waste Management Plan of Greece.

The workshop will focus on the following thematic areas (to be further developed and specified):

• Waste prevention including food waste and the setting up repair and reuse networks

• The use of “green points” decentralised municipal waste collection centres for recycling

• Separate collection of dry recyclable municipal waste (also in cooperation with packaging EPR-scheme HERRCO, WEEE: ECOREC, Batteries: AFIS, Hellenic Recycling Agency – HRA);

• Bio-waste separate – decentralized and centralized – collection and treatment (looking at examples of composting and digestion and adapted to the local Greek situation); taking into account also small-scale facilities (composting containers, home composting, composting bio-waste from markets or hotels, etc.);

• Methods for effective engagement with citizens through information and awareness raising;

• Economic instruments such as in-kind and monetary incentives, PAYT schemes, EPR schemes, tax/levy regulation at local level, new pricing Policy encouraging the prevention, recycling rate and circular economy.

The workshop format will be interactive and participative. Round table discussions with participants and experts as well as smaller working group sessions shall enable an interactive learning and work process.
