Consumption: from growth to decline

Like all beings also human beings consume in order to survive. Different to animals and plants human beings are able to and must shape their consumption. They do so in production, distribution and use of goods. Our society disposes of great richness. It is astonishing that – in the eyes of many people – this richness still has to grow. Accordingly consumption too has to grow. But, during the last decades, consumption has left a great deal of problems. Since the seventies we speak about the «limits of growth». The problems show that degrowth is appropriate, they even require degrowth.

Konsum: Vom Wachsen zum Schrumpfen. Referat und Diskussion. Wie alle Lebewesen konsumiert auch der Mensch, um sein Leben zu erhalten. Im Unterschied zu Tier und Pflanze hat er die Möglichkeit und die Notwendigkeit, seinen Konsum zu gestalten. Das tut er in der Herstellung, der Verteilung und dann eben auch im Gebrauch von Gütern. Unsere Gesellschaft verfügt über einen sehr hohen Reichtum. Bemerkenswert ist, dass – nach Auffassung vieler Leute – dieser weiterhin wachsen soll. Auch der Konsum soll weiter wachsen. Gleichzeitig hat der hohe Konsum in den letzten Jahrzehnten grosse Probleme hinterlassen. Von den „Grenzen des Wachstums“ ist schon seit den 70ern die Rede. Die Probleme zeigen und fordern, dass Schrumpfen angesagt ist.
