In this talk you will be taken on a journey through the development of Irelands boglands, the different types, their national and international significance, their role in climate and water quality regulation and as biodiversity refuges (the ‘green’). We will look at the history of national relationship with bogs in particular at an industrial scale (the ‘brown’) and associated unintentional harms, and also consider what the science is telling us about these unique ecosystems. The talk will introduce you to the exciting new future for Irish bogs as we transition from brown-to-green and the associated challenge of recommencing bog forming conditions.
