Mapping of protected area Sandberg

Students will be mapping the ecosystem of a protected area close to our school. They will collect various material like tree branches, rocks, and other biological material.

The Sanberg is the world-known paleontological locality extending on 61 acres  created by sea sand residues. The Sandberg, now one part of the national reserve Devinska Kobyla (city part Devinska Nova Ves) was 14 million years ago the bottom of a warm interior sea.  The paleontologists discovered in this precious site more than 250 extinct animal species – shellfish, sharks, whales, sea lions, antelopes, mastodons, and anthropoids. The Sandberg is from the scientific point of view one of the most significant localities in Slovakia. The aim of the activity is to map this protected area and to create a current virtual collection of species of plants, animals and minerals.
