Bioblitz Firenze 2015

Bioblitz is an event organized by the Municipality of Florence and the State Forestry Corps with the aim to promove the observation of the biodiversity particularly in the urban areas

A day  in the open air, discovering biodiversity and sustainable development. The BioBlitz, which took place for the third time in Florence on Friday, June 5th , was a great success: the Cascine urban park of Florence, and in the meantime the biogenetic state natural reserve of Vallombrosa, were “invaded” by hundreds of school students and simple nature lovers, who, along with experts, spent the entire morning to search and study the forms of life and the trees of these enchanting natural areas..

Both in the Cascine in Vallombrosa all participants, equipped with camera and magnifying glasses, were accompanied by botanists and forestry experts, and were able to learn more about the techniques of field research, the habits, the behaviors and  the life cycles of the organisms that inhabit these natural areas.

The meeting point was set at the Visitor Center of the Cascine urban park, where each participant was given a kit (hats, survey form , lapis and white sheets) and then split into groups and taken to the different areas of investigation of the natural spaces, beginning the field work with botanists and forestry experts. After a brief presentation, participants went on to direct observation of the biological and systemic relations of the surrounding environment. Finally, they filled the survey form discussed what they learnt and observed.

The initiative was organized by the Municipality of Florence. with the collaboration of Airba (Associazione Italiana Ricerca Biologica Ambientale – Italian Association of Biological and Environmental Research) and was coordinated in Vallombrosa by the State Forestry. «Our goal – said the Councilor for Environment of the City of Florence Alessia Bettini- is to raise as much as possible a sensitivity about the importance of biodiversity, strictly related to quality of life. The BioBlitz aims to raise awareness on the variety of plants and animals and is an invitation to spend free time outdoors, and to cultivate a healthy contact with nature».
