It is a material to be modelled or our home, depending on whether we spell it with a large or small “T”. Material, site, element, soil or planet, the Earth has multiple meanings, all of which share a long and intimate history with art. At the time of the Anthropocene, this relationship can only be considered through the sieve of the ecological commitment of artists and institutions, as shown by recent and current exhibitions (“Le vent se lève” at the MacVal, “Réclamer la terre” at the Palais de Tokyo…).

In contrast to the vast historical achievements of American Land Art, these earthworks violating the ground and requiring highly polluting means of execution, today’s artists want to revive the roots linking them to nature, whether by expressing their fascination for the earth, or even rethinking their practice to neutralise its environmental impact, so that ecological art is not just a question of greenwashing.

À contrepied des vastes réalisations historiques du Land Art américains, ces earthworks violentant le sol et demandant des moyens d’exécution très polluants, les artistes actuels veulent ranimer les racines les reliant à la nature que ce soit en exprimant leur fascination pour la terre, voire repenser leur pratique pour neutraliser son impact environnemental, que l’art écolo ne soit pas qu’une question de greenwashing.
